August 29, 2011 at 3:17 am in reply to: 3rd week of Allopurinol side effects? Or Coincidence? Help!? #11888polecatParticipantdrknow,just my very humble opinion, but your dose just recently bumped and you have one of the worst sore throats you have ever had with difficulty swallowing, if it was me i would discontinue allopurinoll for today and immediately go see your md for a consult.you cannot write off what could be a serious allopurinoll side effect without consulting a md.good luck.
polecatParticipantbestest,i feel for you.im new to this to.been on allopurinoll for 2 months and it has not been a easy ride, though i am committed to stick it out through the advice of my rheumotoligist.if you dont have a rheumotoligist do everything you can to get a appointment asap.with the increase of allopurinoll and your current sua level you can certainly expect some flares for some time as your sua levels drop.you mentioned you took colchicine, but how much?i am starting to understand what i have to do with pain management.certainly a flare that has you in tears you have to be aggressive weather you take colchicine, nsaids, steroids, home remedies, etc.if you have not already i urge you to use the forums search engine to better understand how to deal with gout,i have spent hours of pain ridden sleepness nights doing just that and am much more informed now in all types of subjects related to gout.for example just type in allopurinoll or colchicine and start reading.there is a abundance of information in past posts.good luck and hope you feel better.
polecatParticipantthank you so much for all the support and advice,im thankfull i have access to such a great site.i have been doing alot of reading through the ocean of information out there trying to make a sensible plan, and so far i feel that its all about dropping that ua.its amazing how many people out there struggle by just treating the flareups alone, although some people say they are not responsive to allopurinoll for whatever reason.i have not had alchohol since the onset and i will continue to abstain,i will do that because it seems that it is well documented gout and alchohol do not mix.i will eat a sensible diet and eliminate most seafood and lose some extra pounds also.i will eat cherries, they are good for you anyhow and cant hurt.my rheumatoligist mentioned when i see him in a few weeks he might change me to uloric which i have reservations about.i have no ill efects from the allopurinoll and i think he should up the dose if needed instead of introducing me to a new drug.ua 8.0 to 5.3 in two months with 300 of allopurinoll.i dont like the idea of being on prednisone dailly but i have stomach issues for which i take meds and just cannot tolerate colchicine or nsaids.just to add a quick question,i had a throb in my big toe and stiffness last night at 10 pm and took 20 mg of prednisone and this morning the toe is just stiff,i was worried if i did not take it would be a bad morning.did i act to quickly?do you guys and gals start treating a twinge, throb, etc as a flareup or take the wait and see approach?thanks again to all.
