I’m 41 and had my first gout attack at 28. I’ve had 13 attacks in this time. I was pregnant when I felt an attack coming on in my hand and knew I would not be able to take anything (accept paracetamol which provides no relief) to treat the pain. As i sat there feeling the pain becoming stronger and stronger I decided to run very hot water over my hand. The pain decreased and i could move my fingers slightly without pain. The pain started to build back up. Twenty minutes later I ran very hot water over it again and it decreased the pain more than the previous time. I did this repeatedly until the pain disappeared. It took about 8 repetitions of this before it completely subsided and a flow blown attack was thwarted! Ever since then, when I’ve feel an attack coming on, I do this and have managed to stop full blown attacks. I’m not suggesting that anyone use water hot enough to cause burns. I use water hot enough that it hurt but does not burn. I have only just recently had a full blown attack (I’ didn’t realize it was gout again until it was to late.). My current attack (that I’m past the worst part of) I only tried hot water once the attack was in full swing. The hot water seemed to decrease it a little but I was in so much pain from the gout that I could barley sit there trying to get hot water to my shoulder. My experience is if you run very hot water over it, for a at least a few minutes, repeatedly, before the attack is in full swing you can stop the attack. Has anyone else experienced relief with hot water?
